3 FINGERSTYLE GUITAR TECHNIQUES FOR SONG ACCOMPANIMENT (EVERLASTING GOD)

Today I’ll be speaking a little bit about some fingerstyle techniques that I use. This goes out to you guys who have been playing for some time or perhaps starting out. You could be playing in church, playing in a small group or just having fun on your own. We are going to look at this song called ‘Everlasting God’. You can apply these techniques that I will be showing you to virtually any song that you do.

The key that we will be playing in is the key of A.

Palm Mute

The strumming pattern is pretty straight forward but we are going to introduce palm muting. It’s a technique that I often use. What we are going to do for palm muting is we are just going to use our palm and we are just going to rest it gently on the strings like this and we are going to strum at the same time while my palm is on the strings. So we’re going to apply this to the verse and what I’m trying to do is to dial down the music for the verse so it will give me some space to build up towards the chorus, which is typically what we want for the chorus because we don’t want the verse to overshadow the chorus. Palm muting will go on for the rest of the verse.

Thumb Slap

And once we get to the pre-chorus we are going to introduce what is called the thumb slap.

For the thumb slap, what we’ll do is we’ll gently rotate the wrist and allow the thumb to gently bounce off the strings. Be careful not to rest your thumb onto the strings, lest you mute them. Allow the thumb to just gently bounce off the strings. And of course for greater intensity, you can strike even harder. As we enter the pre-chorus of the song, we are going to apply the technique right at the end of the pre-chorus just before it enters the chorus. This will help us build the music up.

Body Percussion

So now that we’re in the chorus we want to keep the vibe going. We want to have a lively, strong groove. So at this point, what we’re going to do is we’re going to add body percussion. I’m going to thump on my bridge of the guitar and I’m going to strum at the same time. I’ll apply this technique to the entire chorus.

Okay now that you’ve seen how some of these techniques can be used in Everlasting God, I hope you can have some fun with them and try them out on other songs!
