Three Helpful Approaches You Can Take to Practicing
Ah yes, the dreaded “P” word. It conjures up countless hours of hard work and perseverance. It remains a chore for most of us who are trying to make progress in our musical endeavors, with so little time to spare. Where do we begin? Below are three common questions students ask regarding practice and our advice on how to go about it.
HOW DO I EVEN START PRACTICING WHEN I DON’T FEEL LIKE DOING SO?
One reason most of us lack motivation to practice is because we see little possibility of our desired musical outcome taking shape when doing so. We often wind up in a cycle of starting and stopping. So how do we overcome this struggle which most musicians face? For starters, don’t overwhelm yourself with too much. Work on simple realistic tasks. Once you have accomplished these one at a time, you will gain the satisfaction and confidence needed to move on. This momentum is critical to realizing your larger musical objectives and you may just reach your musical “destination” (goals) sooner than you think!
HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED TO SPEND PRACTICING?
Another way to think of practice is to ask ourselves “how close” we want to come to what is musically desirable. All practice is an attempt to make music sound beautiful and pleasant to hear. Paying close attention to what you play and comparing it to the music that you listen to will give you a good idea of how things ought to sound. How much time is needed varies from person to person depending on how satisfied you are with the way you sound. Also, doing things correctly when practicing will greatly enhance results even with just a couple of minutes a day. Quality of time spent is far better than doing the wrong things for hours a day.
HOW CAN I GET RESULTS FAST?
The short answer to this is practice! As mentioned, practice requires motivation and time. You’ll also need a healthy dose of perseverance. Rome wasn’t built in a day. We want results fast because we desperately want the gratification that comes with being able to play a song we love. The shortest route to fulfilling your musical aspiration lies in finding the right musical “diet". You can speed up results by seeking help from a music teacher who is able to identify your problem areas and recommend specific things for you to work on. Nothing beats getting feedback from a "live" person whom you can interact and address things on the spot with. The encouragement from a music teacher is also a vital ingredient in achieving your objectives. Oh yes and a good amount of quality practice is required too!
